Man Convicted Of Lesser Charge In Baby's Shooting Death
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles man accused of involvement in a gang shooting that killed a 4-month-old boy has been convicted of a lesser charge.
Alfonzo Landa, 18, was convicted Tuesday of attempted carjacking with special circumstances. Jurors deadlocked on counts of murder, attempted murder and conspiracy, but Landa still faces life in prison when he's sentenced next month.
Prosecutors say Landa accompanied another man who fired a shotgun at a gang rival in Van Nuys last year. The attack killed 4-month-old Andrew Garcia, who was being fed in a car after a family baptism. Two adults were wounded.
Prosecutors say after the attack, the men unsuccessfully tried to carjack a passing Toyota.
Ricardo Hernandez was arrested in Mexico and faces trial for murder.
