Man Who Climbed Knott's Berry Farm's Supreme Scream Tower Detained By Police

BUENA PARK (CBSLA) - On Saturday, a man climbed some 300 feet up the Knott's Berry Farm Supreme Scream ride and, for a time, didn't come down.

Buena Park Police assigned to the theme park were flagged down, around 7:30 p.m., when the man was spotted climbing the tower. At around 8:50 p.m., the climber began to descend down a ladder that runs the length of the tower. Officers said they did not have any communication with the individual while he was atop the structure.

Parks guests were evacuated from the area of Supreme Scream, but Knott's did not evacuate or close the park.

Some guests expressed their frustration at how the incident was handled.

"...just announced it that someone was trying to commit suicide and they turned off the power and said that everybody had to leave," one told CBSLA's Rick Montanez.

Another man said he thought the situation was crazy, that his oldest was trying to get on their first roller-coaster and then they shut it down. Yet another guest said she thought the situation was sad and witnessed an ambulance leaving for the hospital.

It does appear that suspect was taken away in that ambulance. Police said he will undergo a mental health evaluation and as of now is only detained.

Whether or not the man will face charges will depend on the mental health evaluation and questioning by police.

There has been no word from Knott's Berry Farm officials, though the theme park continued to stay open until its regularly scheduled 11 p.m. closing.
