Man Attacks Couple With Baseball Bat Along 15 Freeway Near Murrieta

MURRIETA (CBSLA.com) — Two people were arrested Tuesday in connection with a road-rate attack near Murrieta in which a motorist and his female passenger were beaten with a baseball bat, leaving them with major injuries.

Gabriel Elijah Bowker, 20, of Grand Terrace, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury. Guadalupe Bowker-Cadena, 29, of Fontana, was arrested on suspicion of murder and being an accessory, according to court records.

The assault happened just before 7 p.m. Monday on northbound Interstate 15, near the exit for Clinton Keith Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses told the CHP that the driver of a white Honda Civic attacked a Lake Elsinore couple who had pulled over on the right shoulder of the freeway, with their two young children strapped into their car seats in the back.

The attacker used a bat to club the victims over the head, Officer Mike Lassig said. Both suffered major injuries and were taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known and their names were not released.

The children were not hurt.

Lassig said the attacker and his female companion fled the area before CHP units arrived.

Bowker and Bowker-Cadena turned themselves in at about 1 a.m., CHP officials said.

There was no mention of what might have triggered the assault.

Anyone with information about the attack can call the CHP's Temecula office at (951) 506-2000.
