Man Arrested In Hit-And-Run Accident Involving El Monte Crossing Guard

EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — A 44-year-old man was free on bail Wednesday after he was arrested for hitting a female crossing guard with his vehicle and fleeing the scene.

Miguel  Nevarez, Jr., of South El Monte, was arrested around noon Tuesday, El Monte police said.

According to authorities, Nevarez was behind the wheel of a 2002 black GMC pick-up truck when he hit Maitee Estrada, 51, in the intersection of E. Fineview Street and N. Durfee Avenue around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The victim's daughter said her mother was thrown about 70 feet due to the impact.

"Cops were telling me that she's lucky to be alive 'cause it was really bad. She just remember she was on the floor facing down," Illiana Torres said.

Police said Estrada was able to push a young boy out of the way before she was hit.

Estrada was last listed in critical but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at County-USC Medical Center.

Witness information led detectives to Nevarez where he was arrested on charges of felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

He posted $100,000 bail at 6:40 p.m. and was released from custody.
