Man Allegedly Kills Girlfriend Before Laying Down In Front Of Oncoming Train
RIVERSIDE (CBS) — Police say a man apparently killed his girlfriend in her Riverside apartment and then took his own life by laying in front of an oncoming train Friday.
The probable murder-suicide happened in the area of Indiana Avenue and Mary Street, according to Riverside authorities.
Riverside police Officer Bryan Galbreath said the murder investigation began shortly after 9 a.m. when relatives of the victim -- now identified as 34-year-old Kathryn Sanchez -- discovered her dead in her residence in the 8800 block of Indiana Avenue.
"There were obvious signs of a homicide," Galbreath said. "Detectives responded and learned that the female had been a recent victim of domestic violence."
According to the officer, the victim's boyfriend -- now identified as 36-year-old Antonio Carreon Jr. -- was arrested in December on suspicion of domestic assault, and investigators immediately turned their attention to him. However, while attempting to locate Carreon, they were informed he had taken his own life.
About 1:30 a.m., the suspect walked onto Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks near the intersection of Indiana and Mary Street, about three miles from the murder scene. Witnesses told police he waited for an approaching train, and then laid across the tracks, whereupon he was struck and killed.
"At this time, the individual is a suspect," Galbreath said.
"Detectives haven't ruled out that someone else could also be involved. But he may be the only suspect."
The officer did not know how long the man and woman had been romantically involved or whether Carreon and Sanchez lived together.
