Man, 91, Succumbs To Serious Injuries Following Corona Bus Crash

CORONA (CBSLA.com) — A 91-year-old man succumbed to his serious injuries following a tour bus crash on Interstate 15 in Corona.

Khang Tieu of Midway was among nearly two-dozen passengers injured when a Sina International bus crashed into a center divider and then overturned on its side Thursday.

Officials said the driver -- 35-year-old Jian Fei Duan -- lost control of the bus while traveling down rain-slicked roads.

The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. on the northbound lane of the 15, just south of Old Temescal Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Tieu was rushed to Riverside Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at about 10 p.m., according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office.

Twenty-two other passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries, CHP Officer Travis Monks said.

Duan, the driver, walked away with minor injuries and declined treatment, Monks said.

The bus driver was reportedly approaching Ontario Avenue at 65 mph and "was unable to maintain control of the bus on the wet roadway," Monks said.

"The bus traveled off the roadway, into the center median area," the officer said. "The bus struck the center median guardrail and overturned onto its side, coming to rest blocking the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes."

The freeway was closed for several hours as first responders set up a triage unit at the scene. The road fully reopened at 8:15 p.m.

The bus was moved to a secure location for a complete inspection to determine if a mechanical failure may have contributed to the crash, Monks said.
