Man, 70ish, Being Taken To Hospital In Ambulance For Non-Life Threatening Matter Killed When It Crashes
PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — Officials said a 70-something man being transported to a hospital for a non-life threatening matter was killed when the ambulance became involved in a two-vehicle crash in Pasadena.
The crash happened about 3:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena, according to Pasadena Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Barrilla.
Four people, including one in cardiac arrest, were taken to Huntington Hospital, Barilla wrote in an incident report.
The deceased was being transported for a non-life-threatening medical reason, Pasadena police Lt. Jesse Carrillo said.
The victim reportedly suffered head trauma in the crash.
At the time of the crash, the ambulance was not employing emergency lights or a siren, Carrillo said.
A woman in her 60s who was driving the other vehicle, suffered an injury, possibly a broken foot, Carrillo said.
The ambulance driver and a second person working for the ambulance company were in stable condition when taken to the hospital, he said.
The crash investigation is ongoing. Police are looking for witnesses.
Carrillo said no one was cited or arrested.
KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo reported from the scene and said investigators were still trying to piece together who hit who hours later.
She said the crash occurred just blocks from the nursing facility where the man lived.
Joselyn Segura told Fajardo her father heard the crash and was startled.
"It was like a big boom. It grabbed his attention and made him turn around," she said.
According to police, the ambulance company -- LifeLine -- is believed to have strapped the victim into his gurney properly so they are still trying to piece together what happened.
