Man, 35, Charged With Fatally Shooting Popular South LA Barber In April
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The LA County DA's Office formally charged a Gardena man in the killing of a South LA barber in April.
Mark Lequan Alford, 35, was charged with one count of murder with the special circumstance of murder during the commission of a robbery and the special allegation that he personally and intentionally discharged a handgun.
Alford was scheduled to be arraigned in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.
Kevin Williams was shot April 25 at a barber shop in the 6500 block of South Western Avenue. Prosecutors said Alford and another man entered the business just before 5 p.m. and demanded money. When Williams resisted, a fight ensued and Alford shot the victim once, prosecutors said.
The two men fled from the store. Williams was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
Williams, known to friends and family as Quincy, was beloved in the community. He was known for often putting on free barbecues and events for kids in the neighborhood.
If convicted, Alford, who was arrested Tuesday, could face life in prison without possibility of parole or the death penalty. The decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made at a later date.
