Man, 27, Sentenced To 15 Years For Stabbing Nurse 12 Times

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities say a 27-year-old man who stabbed a nurse multiple times on Easter 2014, has been sentenced to more than 15 years in state prison.

Romero Carnalla of Los Angeles entered no contest pleas Monday to one felony count each of attempted murder and resisting executive officer and two misdemeanor counts of assault and battery, said Deputy DA Frances Young said

Additionally, Carnalla (whose first name in news accounts has also been spelled Romiro and Ramiro) admitted a prior prison conviction for assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury in 2012.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Cynthia Ulfig of the San Fernando branch immediately sentenced Carnalla to 15 years and eight months in state prison. The defendant also waived any credit for the time he has spent behind bars since his arrest on April 20, 2014.

On that Sunday, the defendant went to Olive View Hospital where he stood outside and then called 911 claiming to have a gun. He claimed that he wanted to shoot someone, according to evidence presented in court. When police arrived at the hospital, Carnalla ran inside where he grabbed two victims who managed to escape, the prosecutor said.

The defendant then grabbed a nurse, wrestled her to the ground and stabbed her 12 times before another nurse was able to stop the attack.

Police officers arrested Carnalla after he resisted them, the prosecutor added.
