Man, 21, Remains In Coma After Deadly Crash On Way Home From Disneyland

LYNWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A 21-year-old man remained in a coma Sunday night and his family was by his side.

The California Highway Patrol believes Tony Miramontes is the innocent victim of a suspected street race on Interstate 5 in Commerce.

"We know that he's gonna make it," said Steven Gomez, his cousin. "We know he's going to pull through. He's a strong man."

Miramontes was among four friends who were coming home from Disneyland Friday. He was driving when they were caught in a chain reaction crash.

Friends say Alfonso Morillo was the only other survivor in their Nissan.

"The only thing that we know is that he went into surgery," said Gomez.

The family says Miramontes had dreams of starting a business and buying a home for his mom and younger brother. They believe he will awaken from his coma and make good on those goals.

But, before he does, he will be dealt another blow: the family must tell him his dear friends, including 19-year-old Michelle Littlefield and 18-year old Brian Lewandowski did not survive.

"We don't know exactly how we're going to handle that once Tony is recovered, how he's gonna take it, what is his first thought gonna be when he wakes up," he said.
