Man Hospitalized In Deputy-Involved Shooting At Malibu Home

MALIBU (CBSLA) — A man was hospitalized Friday following a deputy-involved shooting that arose from an apparent domestic dispute with his mother.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was dispatched to the 28000 block of Bison Court in Malibu shortly before 5 p.m. in response to a report of a patient with a gunshot wound.

Deputies responded and said they found a man barricaded in a room. They said they entered the room, where the man was holding two large kitchen knives. Deputies instructed the man to drop the knives; when he did not, they deployed tasers. They said the tasers did not work and the man lunged forward. That's when two deputies fired their weapons — one shot each. The man was hit once in the torso and was transported via helicopter to the hospital.

Deputies requested security meet them at the hospital because the man was being combative. He was described as being in stable condition Friday night.

The incident followed just one day after deputies say they responded to a report of a mentally ill person at the same residence; they say they found a man living with his mother had allegedly beat her with a 20-pound dumbbell. Deputies left after the mother decided not to press charges in that incident and the man again barricaded himself in a room.

Broken glass and scattered objects could be seen on the ground, below the window of the home, when SKY9 was overhead Friday.

The shooting victim, who has not been identified, faces assault charges in the incident with his mother. Additional charges will be determined by the district attorney.
