Unrelated Power Outages Affect Huntington Beach, Fontana
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS) — Two downed substations left thousands of customers without power Tuesday night in Orange and Riverside Counties, according to Southern California Edison.
The first outage in Huntington Beach affected 21,285, officials said.
Later another substation on a separate circuit went down in Fontana, affecting more than 15,000 customers spanning Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga and parts of unincorporated Riverside County. SoCal Edison said the incidences were unrelated.
Power was restored in both areas by 11 p.m.
The outage came on a busy Valentine's night, affecting business at local restaurants, stores, theaters and other venues.
"We just make the best out of it. We have great locals, great regulars, you know, so they just came out to have a good time. It's supposed to be Valentine's anyway right, candle light," said pub owner Kevin Johnson.
"If you've hung out in Huntington Beach very often, the pandemonium was really kind of on the mellow side," another man said.
Official said they believed the issue in Fontana was caused by a errant Valentine's Mylar balloon. The cause of Huntington Beach's outage was not immediately known.
