LA To Dallas Greyhound Bus Crashes, Injures 26 In Arizona
TONOPAH, Ariz. (CBSLA.com/AP) — A 25-year-old Los Angeles man was in custody Thursday after attacking a Greyhound bus driver, causing the vehicle to crash and injuring 26 people in western Arizona, state officials said.
Maquel Donyel Morris of Los Angeles was on the Dallas-bound bus that left the LA area Tuesday evening when he hallucinated and began pummeling the driver around 1:30 a.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
The bus crossed the highway median, but came to a stop before encountering oncoming traffic when passengers restrained Morris.
He was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. Morris will be booked on numerous felony counts of endangerment, assault and aggravated assault. It was unclear what provoked the attack.
Morris' girlfriend, who said he smoked methamphetamine prior to boarding the bus, was also arrested on unknown charges.
"I woke up to just commotion and I remember hearing screaming," passenger Chrissy Sanchez said. "I thought we were all going to die."
Officials said three injured people were airlifted to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries while 23 others were transported by ambulance.
The passengers who were not injured were picked up by new buses and taken to their destinations.
