The school year wouldn't be longer.
The Los Angeles Unified School District plan calls for the fall semester to start sooner and end sooner.
The Los Angeles Times says the more than 500,000 students in the district would be better prepared for first-semester exams because the testing would take place before the winter vacation erodes that term's learning.
Classes would start about three weeks earlier than the usual September start of school.
Critics say its too hot in August.
The school board votes on the schedule change next month.
