Los Angeles Mom Of 2 Featured On TIME Magazine Cover, Breastfeeding 3-Year-Old Son
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — 'Are You Mom Enough' to pose on the cover of TIME, breastfeeding your 3-year-old son as he stands on a chair beside you?
Just in time for Mother's Day, TIME's cover features Los Angeles mom Jamie Lynne Grumet with her 3-year-old son for a story about attachment parenting – which includes breastfeeding beyond the World Health Organization-recommended one year, co-sleeping and "baby wearing."
Grumet, 26, tells the magazine, "I don't consider breast-feeding immodest at all. I'm not shy about doing it in public."
The decision to have Grumet's son stand on a chair was a deliberate one by the photographer, Martin Schoeller.
"When you think of breast-feeding, you think of mothers holding their children, which was impossible with some of these older kids," Schoeller tells TIME. "I liked the idea of having kids standing up to underline the point that this was an uncommon situation."
Grumet writes the blog I Am Not the Babysitter and covers everything from attachment parenting to breastfeeding to adoption. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, her biological son, Aram – who is featured on the TIME cover with her – and her 5-year-old adopted son, Samuel, from Ethiopia.
The TIME cover has sparked intense debate online and Grumet's site has apparently crashed due to the sudden spike in traffic.
