Los Angeles Loses Bid To Host 2022 World Cup Soccer Tournament
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Los Angeles has lost its bid to host the 2022 World Cup soccer tournament – the planet's most popular sporting event – to Qatar, it was announced Wednesday.

When the United States hosted the most profitable World Cup to date in 1994, Los Angeles was the centerpiece host of the event.
The World Cup final was staged at the Rose Bowl, where Brazil and Italy played 120 minutes to a scoreless tie, and Brazil won on penalty kicks. The World Cup tournament is staged by FIFA, which governs global soccer.
There have been 19 World Cup tournaments since 1930. European nations have won the tournament 10 times and South American nations have won nine. No North American nation has ever won the World Cup.
