Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez's Home Vandalized
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez's Sun Valley home was vandalized overnight, a representative from her office said Friday.
"End the sweeps" was spray painted on the councilwoman's driveway, and her car was covered in some sort of white substance, according to spokeswoman Sophie Gilchrist.
Security video showed two people in hooded sweatshirts in a driveway. One spray painted the message while another targeted her vehicle.
According to Martinez, the attack happened at about 2 a.m., but was not discovered until the morning when she was taking her daughter to school.
"My home was vandalized last night, and it happened right outside the window of my 12-year-old daughter who was asleep at the time," she said.
Martinez said that she is a "fierce" advocate for her community and defended the council's work during the pandemic.
"This council has led on eviction moratorium, on rent relief, utility relief, childcare for families, particularly women to be able to go back to work," she said. "And to wake up to the type of vandalism we experienced last night is outrageous."
Martinez said the vandalism would not deter her from continuing to do her job. She has filed a report with the Los Angeles Police Department.
