Lockdown Lifted At Los Altos High School Following Gun Reports
HACIENDA HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — Los Altos High School was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning due to reports that a student may have brought a loaded gun on campus.
The threat at the school, located at 15325 E. Los Robles Avenue, was first reported to authorities shortly before 9 a.m.
A student in a restroom stall overheard two other students saying "it's loaded," but did not see who they were, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Industry station reported.
It was unclear if the gun was on campus.
At 1 p.m., school police conducted a search of each school building and students were moved to the stadium:
The school issued the following statement on Facebook:
"Los Altos parents,
We are delivering this school messenger to provide you with an update regarding our school.
This morning we received information regarding a possible weapon on campus. We immediately call law enforcement and went in lockdown mode. Police are presently on campus.
This means we have secured the campus to ensure the safety of all students and staff. We want to assure you that all students and staff are safe.
Law enforcement will remain on campus until a thorough search is completed.
Once again, we want to reassure you that all students and staff at Los Altos High School are safe. If you have a student who has not come to school yet, please keep them home. We ask for your support. We will provide information as we are able to."
The lockdown was lifted shortly before 3 p.m. as authorities continued to search the campus.
"We want to assure you that all of our students and all of our staff members are completely safe on our campus and we've taken every precaution that we have done," said Superintendent Barbara Nakaoka of the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District.
Parents were told to wait in line as students were released one-at-a-time.
"I'm really mad because I called the school this morning. I only found out about this because my daughter happened to be passing by at 10, so I called the school and they told me the school was on lockdown because there was a suspect in the neighborhood they were looking for. I didn't find out until the 11 o'clock news that it was an incident on campus," parent Tania Perez said while waiting for her child outside the school.
Deputies concluded their search five hours later and announced that no weapons were found.
