Long Lines And Waiting Greet Early Voters In Norwalk
NORWALK (CBSLA.com) — The early bird gets the worm... and when it comes to early voting, long lines as well.
More than 27 million Americans have already voted in 34 states and Washington D.C.
Joy Benedict, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, went to Norwalk where thousands of Californians also hoped to get the jump on Election Day.
More than 1,800 showed up Sunday with wait times measured at about three hours. More than 1,600 voted early Saturday.
The polling place closed Sunday -- on schedule -- at 4 p.m., but workers remained late to accommodate anyone who was still in line.
More than 700,000 people have already voted by mail, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar. Experts say the wait time should be considerably less on Election Day.
Roslyn Sherrill, an early voter, said she didn't mind the long wait today. "Just one more thing not to have to do Tuesday," she explained. "I'd rather get it done today."
Mansi Chokshi said she wouldn't be able to get to her polling place Tuesday so "this was my only option. I could have come earlier. They were doing this the past two weekends. But as it turned out, I waited until the last minute."
Polls open across the Southland at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
