Long Beach Man Gets Life Sentence For DUI Crash That Killed Girl, 1
LONG BEACH — A man has been sentenced to a potential life term in prison for a drunken-driving crash that killed a baby and injured her brother.
A Long Beach Superior Court judge sentenced Neely Dinkins on Tuesday. Dinkins must serve 36 years before he can be considered eligible for parole.
Dinkins was convicted in February of killing 1-year-old Kaylee Alvarez and injuring her 2-year-old brother, Oscar.
Prosecutors say the children were in a wagon their parents were pulling across a Long Beach street in 2009 when Dinkins hit it. His SUV dragged the wagon up to a block before he stopped. The boy tumbled out, but Dinkins drove off again with the girl still strapped in the wagon until he stopped at his girlfriend's home about a mile away.
