Local law enforcement agencies announced plans to increase patrols near places of worship on Friday and Saturday as Yom Kippur celebrations got underway.

The holiday, which is the holiest day of the year in Judaism, starts at sundown on Friday evening and continues through nightfall on Saturday evening.

While tensions in the Middle East remain high, both the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Friday said that they would be taking necessary measures to make sure that people remained safe.

"The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is closely monitoring the Jewish High Holy Days for any potential threats," LASD said in a statement. "We are committed to ensuring the safety of our diverse communities and encourage everyone to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially during this holy time."

As of Friday evening, neither department said that they had learned of any credible threat.

They did not reveal any information on specific deployment numbers or where exactly extra patrols would be sent.
