Local Food Banks In Desperate Need Of Donations Ahead Of Thanksgiving
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — With the economy taking a toll on many food banks across the Southland, donations are desperately needed before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Michael Flood, the CEO of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, said the supply has been tighter this year compared to 2011.
"What's come from the USDA has dropped significantly. Some of that has to do with general economic conditions, and some of that has to do with what's going on in Washington, D.C.," he said.
Rue White, who volunteers at the Tamarind Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Compton, said they used to feed about 400 or so people during Thanksgiving.
However, White said the church can only feed about 200 people this year because they've run out of food.
"We're short of meat and vegetables. A lot of things we have to pay for that we used to not have to pay for," she said.
