Local Children Pitch In To Help Tornado Victims
SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — Students from a Southland school lent a hand to relief efforts Wednesday for the thousands affected by Monday's tornado in Moore, Oklahoma.
Fifth-graders from Calvary Christian School assembled food and hygiene packs at the Children's Hunger Fund in Sylmar.
The packages will be shipped to the affected area in the southeast suburb of Oklahoma City, where an EF5 tornado ripped through the town Monday, devastating the community.
"I'm helping families that may not have too much," said 10-year-old Chase Kelly.
Though the students have volunteered at the Children's Hunger Fund before, their teachers said this time was different.
"I probably have seen them working the hardest today than I have at other organizations we've served," said teacher Jacqueline Avedissian.
"I think because there's that personal touch to it, and since they know about what's happened over in Oklahoma, they're so excited to help," she said.
Candace Cameron Bure's son Max is a student at Calvary Christan School.
"It's important as a mom for me to show my kids what community service is all about," she said.
"It's tiring but it feels really good inside that we get to help others," said her son, Max Bure.
The packages, which include 10,000 meals, 2,000 pairs of shoes, and 300 blankets, are expected to arrive in Moore next week.
