Local Artist Recruits Students For Giant Mural To Be Unveiled In Fairfax District
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Almost 20 years ago a local artist painted tiles with messages of peace, and now she's recruiting school children to do the same.
KCAL9's Stephanie Simmons reports local artist Gayle Gale is working with students at Hancock Park Elementary on a giant mural of hand-painted tiles she hopes will unite and inspire.
The program, called Kids for Peace, quickly gained attention internationally.
"I've been doing these one-by-one tiles since '95. They were exhibited in the United Nations in 1998, and then they were awarded a medallion in 2001," Gale said.
"My whole concept was to use the creative process and the collective efforts of large groups of people as an attempt to transform society, to show people that we can work together," she explained.
Tiles from students all over the world have been displayed in places like Spain, Brazil and Peru.
The tiles from these local students will be displayed on a wall at the original Farmers Market on 3rd Street and Fairfax.
A public unveiling is scheduled for the end of this month.
