Lifeguards, Beachgoers Rescue Another Kid Buried In The Sand
SUNSET BEACH (CBS) — For the second time in less than a week, lifeguards and quick-thinking beachgoers had to rescue a youth who got trapped in a beach sinkhole.
In today's incident, a boy described about 10-years-old, was digging a hole at Sunset Beach around 5 p.m.
An eyewitness said the boy was buried, for as long as 5 minutes, and it took about a dozen men to dig him out.
The incident occurred near Lifeguard Tower 28 off PCH and Warner Avenue.
The eyewitness said the boy looked blue-purple in color and had to be brought back to consciousness. The quick-thinking eyewitness called 911 and said lifeguards arrived "less than a minute" after he placed the call.
Eyewitness David Nix took a photo of the rescue aftermath and sent it to KCAL9. He said the boy was vomiting sand after his rescue. He was taken to a local hospital and is in good condition.
The unidentified boy had been using Nix's son's shovel to dig a tunnel.
Lifeguards rescued a 17-year-old just two days ago at Newport Beach. Matt Mina told CBS2's Stacey Butler he knew he was lucky to be alive after a sinkhole he dug buried him for more than a half hour.
Nix reports Friday evening that his wife has thrown away the shovel.
