LAX Slowly Returns To Normal Following Deadly Shooting Rampage
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — LAX is slowly returning to normal Friday evening after a deadly rampage occurred at Terminal 3 in the morning.
Paul Anthony Ciancia, 23, originally from Pennsville, N.J., allegedly killed one agent and wounded another, officials said. Several other people were injured in the incident but it was not clear if they had been shot or if they they were injured while trying to flee.
Reporting from LAX, CBS2's Randy Paige said at 5:30 p.m. that "things are slowly returning to normal."
Terminals 1 and 2 have reopened, but Paige said Terminal 3 was likely to remain closed for some time because it is "a very large crime scene."
A scene of chaos erupted just after 9:20 a.m. when the gunmen allegedly started firing an assault rifle.
Officials confirm the alleged shooter carried a handwritten note on his person that he was out to "kill" TSA agents.
Air travel was disrupted around the country. Flights leaving LA were halted and many arriving flights were diverted to nearby airports.
Paige reported it would still be several more hours, or more, before normal flight operations completely returned.
The investigation is on going.
The FBI did not reveal a possible motive for the attack.
CBS2 and KCAL9 obtained video of one victim being wheeled into a hospital on a gurney. The man was handcuffed.
Officials would not say if that man was the suspect or reveal what his injuries were.
Authorities also said they are confident the gunman acted alone.
The unidentified agent who was killed, was the first TSA agent to die in the line of duty.
