Lawndale Man Suspected In 1994 Chicago Murder
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A Lawndale man is believed to be a Chicago fugitive who shot a man in the head at the home of his estranged wife in 1994.
Jose Hernandez Saldana, 56, is awaiting extradition back to Illinois to face charges in the murder of Carlos Munoz on Sept. 15, 1994, FBI officials said. Saldana was charged two days after Munoz's murder, but attempts to locate him were unsuccessful.
Saldana was believed to have fled to his native country of Mexico.
Cold case detectives reopened the case this year, and with the help of the FBI, found Saldana living in California. One of Saldana's sons had been arrested recently, and his car had been released to a man identified as Carlos Rosalio Gonzalez, who investigators say was, in fact, Jose Saldana.
Saldana was arrested by a task force of FBI agents and LAPD officers last Friday.
