LAUSD Still Needs To Spend $10M From Microsoft Settlement
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — LA schools have about $10 million in vouchers to buy the latest technology before they expire next year, so why haven't they used them up?
State officials are urging the Los Angeles Unified School District and a few other neighboring districts to take advantage of $66 million vouchers to buy technology, which remain from a $212 million settlement with Microsoft Corp., according to the Los Angeles Times.
Most of that money has been claimed, but LAUSD hasn't used up its total share of the settlement, about $37 million.
Using the vouchers does not require districts to buy Microsoft products.
Part of the problem is that districts have to use their own funding up front and apply for reimbursement, according to the newspaper, a difficult prospect with school budgets stretched thin.
Neighboring districts like Compton Unified and Glendale Unified have exhausted their share of the settlements – spending $1.7 million and $951,000, respectively.
