LAUSD Kicks Off Annual 'Student Recovery Day'
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Unified School District Friday kicked off its annual Student Recovery Day.
Former dropouts Sergio Galvan and Andrew Garcia joined LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy and a few board members at the media event, which was held at 9 a.m. at Fremont High School, 7676 S. San Pedro St.
Board Vice President Steve Zimmer also presented progress made since the "2013 School Discipline Policy and School Climate Bill of Rights" was passed earlier this year. The new policy includes guidelines for alternative ways of disciplining students, such as positive incentives.
LAUSD students will no longer be suspended or expelled for willful defiance, officials said.
Since the first Student Recovery Day in Oct. 2009, 4,059 students have been "recovered" and returned to school to graduate.
