LAUSD Gets Temporary Reprieve From Massive Budget Cuts

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The Los Angeles Unified School District is getting a temporary reprieve from massive budget cuts, but thousands of teachers and staff members are still facing potential layoffs.

The school board Tuesday delayed a vote on a $6 billion plan that would cut jobs, adult education classes and funding for early education and arts programs.

They are asking LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy to work with teachers unions develop a new proposal that would save the programs.

Educators, teachers and parents have all protested the current plan, which is designed to bridge a $557 million deficit.

A final version of the budget is months away, but Deasy is allowed to begin preparing layoff notices that would be sent by March 8.
