Large Cockfighting Operation Busted In Compton
COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — A large cockfighting operation was busted in Compton Saturday by Los Angeles County's Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) and the spcaLA.
The bust occurred at 8 a.m. at a home in the 14000 block of Castlegate Avenue.
Aaron Reyes, deputy director of DACC, wrote in a statement "This property was suspected of hosting illegal cockfights in the past and was being monitored by our Major Cases Unit. We received a tip that a high stakes cockfight was going to take place today and we secured a search warrant."
He said that when officers came upon the residence about 20 people jumped the fence and fled. Another 47 were detained for questioning.
Multiple roosters were found bleeding or deceased.
The injured birds were taken the Animal Care and Control's veterinary team and euthanized.
The owner of the residence is believed to have been one of the people who fled when officials arrived.
According to DACC, the people cited will face animal cruelty charges and being a spectator at an illegal cockfight. Fines can range up to $1,000 and one year in jail.
DACC said several minors were also present at the cockfights. The minors were released to relatives.
