LAPD To Beef Up Security At LAX, Transit Hubs This Weekend
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The Los Angeles Police Department is on heightened alert after counterterrorism officials confirmed they are investigating a credible but unconfirmed threat just days before the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
The information contains specific references about car bombs in Washington, D.C., and New York.
The threat originates from Pakistan and what remains of al Qaeda's core leadership, including its new head Ayman al Zawahiri, reports CBS News homeland security correspondent Bob Orr.
U.S. transit officials say they are looking for three men who may have traveled, or are looking to travel, from Pakistan to the United States.
Police Chief Charlie Beck has there is no credible threat against Los Angeles, but that security has been beefed up at Los Angeles International Airport and transit hubs across the city.
"I think it makes us all more nervous than we would normally be," Metrolink commuter Dan Coleman told CBS2. "I mean, we think about 9/11, and the towers being attacked and the Pentagon being attacked and it doesn't make us feel very good to know people are out there that want to attack us, but it's our reality."
Other commuters say they are not concerned because they are confident in the security measures the city has in place.
