KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou Reports

Officer Chris No says the officer, 22-year LAPD veteran Steve Jenkins, was shot at a Sylmar home sometime after 2 a.m. on Monday.

No says Jenkins, a canine handler, was shot twice by the suspect who is described as a Hispanic man in his 50s.

The officer is being treated at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. He is listed in critical but guarded condition after doctors removed two bullets from Jenkins' body.

Dr. Bradley Roth said in a news conference that Jenkins was shot once in the face and once in his shoulder area. He is also suffered several rib fractures and damage to his lungs.

Police have swarmed the Sylmar neighborhood and a SWAT team is outside the house where the shooting occurred.

The gunman was barricaded inside.

Police fired tear gas into that home several times Monday morning, beginning around 9:30 a.m. Officials say the suspect could be seen running inside the home, and fired shots from the residence, prompting police to return fire. No officers were hit. It is still unclear if the suspect has been injured.
