1 Dead, 4 Injured In LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting At Universal CityWalk
NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Officials Monday were investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting at Universal CityWalk that also left four people injured, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police responded to CityWalk around 1:15 a.m. for a disturbance call at the Infusion Lounge.
Witnesses told CBS2 that a battle of the DJs contest was being held at the club when a fight erupted and spilled outside the venue.
"I was DJing and a lot of guys were rumbling and fighting and of course, you know, they start throwing bottles and this escalated and gunshots rang out," DJ Phil said.
"When they (police) arrived at the scene they heard gunshots emitting from the crowd," Sgt. Barry Montgomery said. "Officers saw a suspect with a gun and an officer-involved shooting occurred."
A man, later identified as 21-year-old James White Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. Four other people suffered minor injuries while trying to escape the mobs of running people and were transported to a local hospital, according the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
A handgun was recovered, but no arrests were made and no officers were injured, police said.
The incident was being investigated by the LAPD's North Hollywood Division. CityWalk falls under split-jurisdiction of the LAPD and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
CityWalk and Universal Studios opened on time Monday, representatives said.
