LAPD Gives Safety Tips For Halloween
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Law enforcement and city officials are reminding the public to be safe this Halloween.
Los Angeles Police Department officers Thursday shared safety tips about costumes, candy, pets and traffic.
Officers said it's important children and adults wear safe costumes that are reflective, don't obstruct vision and don't include real-looking weapons.
"If you do wear a mask it can obstruct your vision," Officer Art Ornelas told CBS2's Amber Lee. "What we're asking you to do, if you do have a mask, bring the mask up when you're going to the house, crossing the street, that way you can actually look at traffic. Once you get to the front porch, yell out 'Trick or Treat' then please you can lower the mask."
Ornelas said it's important for parents to check candy and other treats that are being handed out.
"It's very very important that you inspect the candy and make sure the seal is not broken," he said.
He also shared tips for keeping pets safe.
"A lot of door knocking, a lot of children dressed in costumes and the dogs do get scared," Ornelas said. "Dogs will always go up to the front door when somebody rings the doorbell, we understand that, but if you can secure the dog for a short amount of time, it's safer for the dog, and it's also safer for the children."
LAUSD Police Chief Zipperman told KNX1070 it's important children use crosswalks and do not cross in the middle of the street.

"Two-thirds of Halloween crashes are alcohol related, and I think it's important to understand that parents need to ensure their youngsters are walking in groups," he said. "Just because you see the car, doesn't mean the driver can see you."
