LAPD Continues End of Summer DUI Crackdown With Checkpoints Throughout SoCal
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — With Labor Day less than two weeks away, the LAPD and other law enforcement agencies are gearing up to make sure you don't drink and drive.
It's part of the national campaign "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over", running through September 2.
DUI checkpoints are up tonight in Hollywood and will pop-up across the area through the holiday.
The LAPD is among 115 local police departments across the state working with the CHP and "Avoid DUI" task forces to set up "saturation patrols" at various locations, California Office of Traffic Safety director Christopher J. Murphy said.
According to the OTS, statistics show that, on average, two people die every day in California in an impaired driving collision, and many times that are seriously injured.
In 2011, 774 California drivers with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher were killed in alcohol-impaired crash, the agency said.
"Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous. California is increasing enforcement during the holiday to ensure that those who choose to drive while impaired will be caught and arrested," Murphy said.
A first-time DUI conviction can cost up to $10,000 in fines, legal fees, and insurance increases.
The LAPD will conduct checkpoints over the remainder of this week as follows:

- 8 p.m., tonight, a six-hour checkpoint will begin in Hollywood at Sunset Boulevard and Bronson Avenue
- 8 p.m., Friday, a six-hour checkpoint will begin in Hollywood at Highland and De Longpre avenues
- 8 p.m., Friday, a six-hour checkpoint will begin in the southwest area at La Brea Avenue and Rodeo Road
- 6 p.m. Saturday, a six-hour checkpoint will begin in the southwest area at Western Avenue and 39th Street
- 8 p.m. Saturday, a six-hour checkpoint will begin in the Topanga area at Sherman Way and Variel Avenue
The checkpoints are subject to change.
