Lakers, Angels To Host Book, Food Drives
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Feeling thankful? The Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are offering you a chance to give back.
The Angels' team of groundskeepers will begin their 10th annual Thanksgiving Holiday Canned Food Drive Friday till Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
For every three cans of food or $1.50 donated, people will get to stand at home plate and swing at balls thrown by a pitching machine at Angels Stadium. There is a 20-pitch maximum per person.
A donation of two canned food items or $1 will get fans in the bullpen and a $25 donation will get you the chance to catch baseballs in the outfield for 15 minutes. Bats, balls and helmets will be provided.
A tour of the Angels clubhouse can be had for a $10 donation.
All proceeds collected during the drive will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
Not to be outdone, the Los Angeles Lakers will collect new children's books at Sunday's game against the Golden State Warriors, as part of their annual Chick Hearn Night. Books will be collected from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. outside the Star Plaza entrance of Staples Center.
All fans who donate a new children's book will receive an official 2010-2011 Lakers pin.
All books will be donated in Hearn's memory to Everybody Wins! Los Angeles, an organization that aims to increase the success of children in school and in life through one-on-one reading with caring adults.
