Driver Rescued From Street Flooding After Nightmarish Commute
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) - Freeways were flooded and surface streets weren't much better Thursday morning as heavy rains drenched Southern California and caused multiple crashes and closures.
One driver near Vineland and Vanowen in the San Fernando Valley had to be rescued after driving through at least two feet of swirling water.
A mudslide shut down the eastbound Victory Boulevard offramp from the southbound Hollywood (170) Freeway in the Valley Glen area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Several roads in the Malibu burn areas including Pacific Coast Highway were closed after a mudslide in the Leo Carrillo State Beach area.
The 5 Freeway through the Grapevine Pass was closed in both directions due to heavy snow.
Further south, the 5 Freeway was closed at the 170 due to flooding until further notice. Crews were working with pumps to clear the southbound lanes.
Streets around the San Fernando Valley were heavily flooded, often forcing traffic to slow significantly or merge into single lanes.
A big rig semi-trailer was overturned after sliding down an embankment along the I-5 at Highway 14 in the Newhall Pass shortly after 11 a.m. There was no immediate word on injuries.
At least one person was hurt after a six-vehicle wreck on the eastbound Riverside (91) Freeway near
Green River Road in Corona. The crash left two lanes blocked, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Police say a woman waiting at a bus stop at 15th and Main in Santa Ana was killed when one of two vehicles involved in a collision spun out and hit her.
