The event was part of a nationwide commemoration of the one-year anniversary of a deadly shooting rampage that also left 13 wounded, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.
Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild had asked mayors across the country to commemorate the tragedy.
"And someone spontaneously pulled out a gun and killed 6 people, injured 13 more. So it's important to remember," Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge said.
LaBonge filling in for Mayor Antonio Villairagosa struck the bell at 9:11 a.m. Sunday, which was 10:11 a.m. in Tucson -- the time the shootings took place.
