LA Marathon Runners To Face Blustery Weather

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A light rain fell across most parts of the Southland overnight, but a chance of showers will remain in the forecast in advance of a wetter storm due Sunday night.

National Weather Service forecasters predict a 50 percent chance of showers through Saturday evening, with highs expected to be in the lower 60s.

Sunday – which marks the first day of spring and the Los Angeles Marathon -- should be overcast and breezy with winds out of the south at 15-25 mph and a 50 percent chance of measurable rain. Highs will be in the lower 60s.

KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports that marathon runners say they'll be ready to face the forecast.

"I think the bulk of the heaviest rain will come during the last part of the race but it will be wet, I'm sure, for the actual event," National Weather Service meteorologist Curt Kaplan said.

By Sunday night, steady rain is predicted, with gusts out of the southeast up to about 40 mph. The rain is expected to continue into Monday morning but taper off later in the day.

Downtown Los Angeles has received about 16 inches of rain since July 1, well ahead of the norm for the date, about 13 inches, and slightly more than the yearly average of about 15 inches.
