LA Kings Captain Dustin Brown, Coach Darryl Sutter Agree With Voynov Suspension
EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Kings are moving on without star defenseman Slava Voynov, who was suspended indefinitely by the league after he was arrested Monday on accusations of domestic violence.
Voynov posted bail Monday afternoon, shortly after images were captured of a woman with apparent injuries getting out of an SUV and walking into the two-time Stanley Cup champion's home.
Neighbors said Monday that they were surprised by the accusations.
"I've been thinking about it a lot, off and on during this day," neighbor Lyn Coulter said. "And mostly, (I've been) feeling sad."
As the Kings took to the ice for practice during a three-day break between games, a number of players discussed the issue with CBS2.
"Obviously, this came down really quick yesterday, and it's one of those things, like I said, it's an unfortunate situation," Kings captain Dustin Brown said.
While the Kings may feel Voynov's absence on the ice in the midst of defending the Stanley Cup, coach Darryl Sutter says he agrees with the league's decision to suspend the Russia native while the investigation into the allegations continues.
"Absolutely (I agree)," Sutter said. "It's very appropriate."
"(With the) current state of culture and society over the last year, it's a pretty normal response," Brown echoed.
Voynov was arrested at Little Company of Mary hospital in Torrance after staff performed an examination of the woman, whom Voynov had brought in.
The District Attorney's Office expects to receive a police report within the week, which will reveal whether or not charges will ultimately be filed.
Voynov is expected in court Dec. 1.
