La Jolla Beach Closed After Possible Great White Shark Sighting

LA JOLLA (CBS) — A portion of a popular San Diego-area beach was closed to the public on Monday after lifeguards spotted a shark swimming off the coast.

Lifeguards at La Jolla Shores were holding a swimming drill when a 12-to-15-foot shark — believed to be a Great White — was spotted about 50 yards from the beach, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque.

"There was a lifeguard out doing a training swim, she was just outside the surf line where the breakers form to come in to break, and she saw this 14-foot Great White shark just cruising around," Luque told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.

The lifeguard — whom Luque described as "very knowledgeable" — reportedly also saw "other sharks in the area".

Luque said shark attacks are extremely rare, but swimmers should always keep an eye out.

"Be aware, if you have any caution, just ask a lifeguard when you get to the beach if there's any sightings, and of course, if you happen to be out in the water and you see one, get the heck into shore," said Luque.

Officials will reevaluate whether to reopen the beach on Tuesday, Luque said.
