Major Street Closures Planned For 3rd CicLAvia Event
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Tens of thousands of bicyclists will claim city streets Sunday, as the City of Los Angeles celebrates its third CicLAvia street closure event.
Modeled after a weekly event in Bogota, Colombia, the event will allow bicyclists and pedestrians to have the rule of the road on a winding route from Hollywood through the Westlake District to the Civic Center, and south across downtown.
Last year, it was estimated that 130,000 riders took part.
Some 10.5 miles of city streets will be blocked off to motor traffic and opened to pedestrians and bicyclists. Vehicles will be banned along the route, and only a few cross streets will be open all day Sunday.
Major streets that will host the curb-to-curb bike parade will be New Hampshire, Seventh and Spring streets between Hollywood and the Civic Center, Fourth Street in Boyle Heights and First and Main streets near City Hall.
Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will join City Controller Wendy Greuel and Councilmen Tom LaBonge and Jose Huizar in celebrating the event.
