LA Declares Aug. 24 Kobe Bryant Day

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles City Council has declared Wednesday as Kobe Bryant Day in Los Angeles as a way of thanking him "For his single-minded dedication to excellence, the fans and the entire city and the region." The date, 8-24, commemorates the two uniform numbers he wore during his legendary career.

Bryant, who won five titles and played his entire 20 years in Laker purple and gold, wore 8 for the first part of his career then switched to 24.

"For 20 years, we were all the beneficiaries of Kobe's incredible talent and legendary work ethic, and on 8-24 we'll gather to say, 'Thank you, Mamba,'" Councilman José Huizar said.

The event will take place at Los Angeles City Hall at 10 a.m.

Bryant will also be honored for his off-court contributions to L.A. community. Along with his wife Vanessa, the Bryants created the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation, dedicated to improving the lives of youth and families in need.
