LA City Council Seeks $13.25 Minimum Wage, Exploring $15.25
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Four City Council members Tuesday introduced a plan to raise the citywide minimum wage to $13.25 an hour.
The proposal is backed by Mike Bonin, Gil Cedillo, Nury Martinez and Curren Price Jr. and comes more than a month after Mayor Eric Garcetti said he supported raising hourly wages to $13.25 by 2017.
The four member group also said they would continue to explore the possibility of raising the wage to $15.25 by 2019.
Labor groups rallied at City Hall to call for raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour and requiring employers to provide paid sick days and wage-theft protection. They said approximately 810,000 Angelenos make less than $15 an hour.
The wage theft and paid sick day measures were not included in the council motion, but an aide said those issues could be brought up in committee.
The state rate is set to rise to $10 in January 2016.
Last week, the city council boosted the minimum wage for non-union hotel workers to $15.37 per hour starting July 1, 2015.
