L.A.'s Park Rangers Promote Environmental Science
Park rangers are tasked with safeguarding recreational areas, the wildlife that inhabit these sites and the guests that venture into the wilderness. In Los Angeles, experienced rangers earn an average annual salary of $35,000, with top nature experts raking in wages north of $80,000, according to current data. It is a meritorious vocation that includes developing imperative conservation programs and upholding the significance of environmental science.
"L.A. is surrounded by mountains, ocean and desert, and it's crucial that we understand how to not only protect these open spaces, but also how to live with them responsibly in a sustainable manner," said Anthony Bevilacqua, a park ranger at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
How far-reaching is a ranger's job?
"Park rangers are working diligently in schools and communities to connect urban youth with the resources they need to get them to parks and open space, and this enables them to learn about environmental science close to home."
What is your outlook for the coming years?
"Many young people will be joining the ranks as park rangers in 2022, as the old guard continues to retire. They will be more diverse, not only in their skills and abilities, but also in their ethnic and cultural history."

"A successful park ranger is knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics relating to the natural and cultural resources found in his or her park and finds effective ways to communicate that information to park visitors in a way that is relevant to them."
How does one plan for a sustainable career?
"The best way to prepare is to get an education, at least a four-year degree in the natural or cultural resources, and gain experience through volunteering and internships."
What is your message to endeavoring park rangers?
"There are over 400 national park units in all parts of the U.S., but you might have to work hard and be patient before you end up in your dream park. Many rangers work seasonally for years before they can get a permanent job, so be flexible and stay focused."
