L.A. Rally Kicks Off Democratic Campaign Race
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California union leaders have given Democratic candidates a boost with a Labor Day rally that serves as the unofficial kickoff to the general election season.
An estimated 650 union members gathered Monday at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic cathedral in downtown Los Angeles, where they mingled with Democrats up and down the November ticket. Among others, that included gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, lieutenant governor candidate Gavin Newsom and attorney general candidate Kamala Harris.
Some candidates even volunteered to serve a breakfast of eggs, bacon and hashbrowns to the workers and organizers. But mostly it was an opportunity for them to fire up some of their core supporters in preparation for what promises to be a series of hard-fought races.
