L.A. City Council Paves Way For East Hollywood Target To Resume Construction

EAST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) —  The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday cleared the way for Target to resume construction on its new store in East Hollywood.

In a 13-to-0 vote, the council revised the planning and zoning policy to ensure Target's building meets zoning standards. Construction is expected to restart in June.

The partially built Target store at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Western Avenue has been untouched since 2014 because of legal challenges.

Opponents, including the La Mirada Avenue Neighborhood Association and Hollywoodians Encouraging Logical Planning (HELP), filed a lawsuit to stop the project, claiming the 74-foot structure was being built in a 35-foot zoning space.

Councilman Mitch O'Farrell said the city has worked with the City Attorney's office along with the Department of Building and Safety to address the zoning issues.

"It's also a lesson that when we entitle projects that they must be done in the right way, and that's what I want to make sure we do every step of the way moving forward," O'Farrell said.

But still, the La Mirada Neighborhood Association is not happy with Wednesday's move by the city council. It released this statement: "We want a Target project that is legal and an honest process. But what we saw today was neither."

Opponents plan to file another lawsuit challenging the newly approved rules, said their attorney Richard MacNaughton.
