Bryant, playing in his hometown of Philadelphia, needed 23 points to tie O'Neal, scored his 24th point of the game in the 2nd quarter.
"To say this is a huge honor would be an understatement. I'm so fortunate to have such a good career." Bryant said after the game.
It was looking like a night where the Lakers would be able to celebrate Bryant's milestone, but after Andrew Bynum's alley-oop with 4:38 left in the fourth quarter, the 76ers went on a 14-2 run to end the game.
The Lakers (14-11) will play at Boston on Thursday.
