Kings Release Backup Goalie Erik Ersberg

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Kings have released former backup goalie Erik Ersberg, who is expected to join a team in Russia.

The Kings formally released Ersberg on Saturday, more than a week after they placed him on waivers when he left their AHL affiliate in Manchester without permission.

The Swedish goalie lost a competition to Jonathan Bernier in training camp for the backup job behind Jonathan Quick. Ersberg was hindered by a bruised left hand and never got into an exhibition game.

Ersberg played two games in Manchester before leaving for an apparent job in the KHL.

Ersberg played in just 11 games for the Kings last season, never winning the trust of coach Terry Murray while Quick set the franchise record for victories.
